Potassium Chloride

Potassium chloride is a mineral supplement that can treat or prevent low levels of potassium in the blood, also known as hypokalemia. Potassium is an essential mineral that is present in most human cells. Potassium chloride can be used as a supplement to increase potassium intake in instances where it is not possible to consume enough potassium through diet alone. It is also used as a substitute for salt in low sodium diets.

Potassium chloride has been found to have benefits such as reducing high blood pressure, reducing the risk of developing heart disease and stroke, and reducing salt consumption when used as a substitute. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension, potassium supplementation was found to be an effective way to lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension.

The recommended daily intake of potassium for adults is 3,400 mg for males and 2,600 mg for females. However, a person should not take potassium chloride if they take medications that increase excess potassium or if they have chronic kidney disease, as their kidneys might be unable to expel excess potassium from the blood. The potential side effects of potassium chloride include uneven heartbeat, muscle weakness, severe stomach pain, numbness or tingling in the hands, feet, or mouth, and allergic reactions.

Case studies:
  • A study published in the Journal of Clinical Hypertension found that potassium supplementation was an effective way to lower blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
  • A study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that dietary potassium intake was inversely associated with the risk of stroke.
