Biotin
Biotin, also known as vitamin B7 or vitamin H, is a water-soluble vitamin that is essential for the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in the body. It is found in small amounts in a variety of foods such as eggs, nuts, and whole grains. Biotin supplements are also available in the form of capsules or tablets.
Benefits of Biotin
Biotin has been shown to have benefits for those suffering from pathologic brittle hair syndrome or uncombable hair syndrome. Although there is no good scientific evidence to support the use of biotin for hair loss and brittle nails, some studies suggest that biotin supplementation may help stimulate hair regrowth in people who have a clinical biotin deficiency. Additionally, biotin has been shown to reduce levels of fasting glucose, total cholesterol, and triglycerides among people with type 2 diabetes.
Case Studies
There have been no randomized controlled trials to prove the efficacy of supplementation with biotin in normal, healthy individuals. However, some case reports suggest that biotin supplementation is beneficial for people who have an underlying medical condition causing their hair to thin.
The recommended daily intake (RDI) of biotin ranges from 25-30mcg (youth) upwards to 100mcg (adults). However, some studies have used higher doses of biotin ranging from 2.5mg to 10mg per day. This dose appears relatively safe, although it is much higher than the RDI.
Biotin is likely safe for most people when taken by mouth at recommended doses. However, taking high doses of biotin supplements may cause side effects such as an upset stomach and skin rash. In rare cases, high doses of biotin may cause interference with lab tests.
