Choline Bitartrate
Choline Bitartrate is a dietary supplement that contains choline, a nutrient that is essential for brain and nervous system function, as well as other bodily processes. Choline is needed to produce acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter for memory, mood, muscle control, and other brain and nervous system functions. Choline also plays important roles in modulating gene expression, cell membrane signaling, lipid transport and metabolism, and early brain development. Choline Bitartrate is one of several forms of choline supplements available. Other forms include phosphatidylcholine and lecithin. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), most people in the United States consume less than the adequate intake (AI) for choline. The recommended dosage for choline is around 500 mg.
Benefits of Choline Bitartrate:
It can help improve cognitive function, including memory and focus. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that higher choline intake during pregnancy was associated with better cognitive function in children at age 7. Choline may also help reduce the risk of fatty liver disease, muscle damage, and other health conditions.
There are several case studies regarding the benefits of Choline Bitartrate. A study published in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found that choline supplementation improved physical performance in athletes. Another study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that different forms of choline supplements are metabolized differently in adults. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that higher choline intake during pregnancy was associated with better cognitive function in children at age 7.
When taken in recommended dosages, Choline Bitartrate is considered safe for most people. However, taking high doses of choline can cause side effects such as sweating, fishy body odor, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, low blood pressure (hypotension), liver damage, heart attack (myocardial infarction), and stroke. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for choline for adults 19 years and older is 3,500 mg daily and is based on the amount that has been shown to produce these side effects.
