N-Acetyl L-Cysteine

N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) is a prodrug for the amino acid L-cysteine and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is commonly taken as a supplement for health and wellness and is used in clinical settings to treat drug overdose, cystic fibrosis, and chronic obstructive lung disease.

Here are some benefits of NAC:
  • Supports detoxification: NAC supports the body’s antioxidant and nitric oxide systems during stress, infections, toxic assault, etc.. It can help leverage the body’s full detoxification potential by increasing levels of intracellular cysteine with subsequent increase in glutathione (GSH).
  • Skin health: NAC can help maintain tissue integrity and strengthen immune function.
  • Respiratory health: NAC has mucolytic properties that can help treat respiratory conditions such as chronic bronchitis, asthma, and cystic fibrosis.
  • Liver health: NAC can help protect the liver from damage caused by toxins such as alcohol and acetaminophen.
  • Mental health: NAC has been shown to improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

A study found that NAC improved symptoms of obesity-associated complications such as insulin resistance, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Another study reported “marked improvements” in respiratory symptoms after one to two months of therapy with NAC.

The recommended dosage of NAC varies depending on the condition being treated. In most cases, it should be safe for adults to take 600 mg of NAC once or twice a day. Potential side effects of NAC include heartburn, nausea, flatulence, headache, tinnitus, urticaria, rash, chills, fever, and anaphylactoid reactions (pseudoanaphylaxis). However, doses used were well tolerated by patients and only mild adverse effects were reported.
