Fenugreek Seed Powder

Fenugreek Seed Powder is a spice and food grain that has been traditionally used for medicinal purposes in Egypt, Southern Europe, India, Asia, and North Africa. It is commonly promoted as a dietary supplement for diabetes, menstrual cramps, and to stimulate milk production during breastfeeding. Fenugreek glycosides including saponins, sapogenins (e.g., diosgenin), similagenin, savsalpogenin, and yuccagenin are reported to be major components behind health benefits of fenugreek seeds.

The benefits of Fenugreek Seed Powder include lowering blood sugar levels in people with diabetes or prediabetes. A randomized controlled pilot study showed that fenugreek seeds extract powder enhanced male libido in healthy exercising male subjects. Another study showed that fenugreek seed extract improved blood glucose and lipid profiles in type 2 diabetic patients.

The recommended dosage of Fenugreek Seed Powder varies depending on the purpose of use. Studies in people with type 2 diabetes have used a range of fenugreek—from five to 100 grams of powdered fenugreek seed taken one to two times daily. For male subjects during resistance training, the recommended dosage is 500 mg/day of furostanol glycosides-based fenugreek seeds extract (Fenu-FG) supplementation during an 8-week resistance training program.

Potential side effects of Fenugreek Seed Powder include diarrhea, stomach upset, bloating, gas, dizziness, and headaches. It may also lower blood sugar and potassium levels. It is possibly safe when the powdered seed is taken for up to 3 years. However, its safety in larger doses is uncertain. It should not be used by children as a supplement.
