Diindolylmethane (DIM)
Diindolylmethane (DIM) is a natural compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and Brussels sprouts. It is a metabolite of Indole-3-carbinol. DIM supplements are being studied for their protective effects against certain cancers, to help prevent prostate enlargement, treat acne, aid weight loss, and reduce premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopause symptoms.
Here are some benefits of Diindolylmethane (DIM):
- Supports healthy estrogen levels in the body.
- Helps balance hormone levels via its effects on estrogen.
- Helps support detoxification.
- May help reduce the risk of certain types of cancer.
According to a controlled safety study, DIM is safe, with no significant side-effects found, even with DIM at a dose 10 times higher than that currently used in humans. However, the most common side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, gas, and dark-colored urine when taken in doses up to 150 mg daily for up to 1 year. Due to a lack of research in humans, little is known about the long-term safety and side effects of DIM supplements.
Current human research doesn’t show DIM supplements to be toxic or have serious side effects. It is best to talk with your doctor before using any supplement. The recommended dosage for DIM supplements is not established yet. However, in studies, doses ranging from 100 mg to 300 mg per day have been used.
