D-Aspartic Acid

D-Aspartic Acid (DAA) is an amino acid that is synthesized in the body and can also be obtained through protein-containing foods or dietary supplements. DAA plays a role in reproductive function and fertility. Some studies suggest that DAA supplementation may increase testosterone levels, which can lead to improved athletic performance, muscle growth, and strength. However, other studies have shown mixed results, with some showing no significant changes in testosterone levels. One study even reported a decrease in basal testosterone levels after taking a larger daily dose of DAA (6 g/day) for 14 days. Another study showed that DAA supplementation had no effect on testosterone levels in resistance-trained men. Therefore, the benefits of DAA supplementation are not conclusive and more research is needed to determine its effectiveness.

The recommended daily dosage for DAA powder is 2,500 mg (1 tsp) or 3,500 mg (1/2 tbs) to be taken once with the first meal of the day. It should not be taken for longer than eight full weeks at a time without a four-week break in between courses. For DAA capsules, take five capsules to be taken once with the first meal of the day. It is important not to exceed the recommended dosage.

There have been reports of irritability, nervousness, rapid heart rate, headache, hair loss, and acne as potential side effects of DAA supplementation. However, no adverse health effects have been reported from individuals who have taken the recommended dosage of DAA for no more than 90 days.

One resistance training study of 20 men with no health conditions did report irritability, nervousness, rapid heart rate, and headache in two participants receiving DAA. However, the same adverse effects were also reported by one participant in the placebo group. In the absence of toxicity or serious side effects, the main drawback of supplementation with DAA is its inconclusive benefits.
