Whole Egg Powder
Whole egg powder is a type of dried egg that is made by removing the shell and then drying the egg whites and yolks. According to ScienceDirect, the advantages of using powdered eggs include that they are non-perishable and have a long shelf life. Furthermore, egg powder is a good source of protein and nutrients such as choline, vitamin B12, and vitamin D.
A study by Bagheri et al. assessed the effects of whole egg protein at an optimal dose of 20 g or more in the context of a diet providing an adequate amount of dietary protein (1.4 g/kg body weight or greater) with promising results. The study provided resistance-trained males three whole eggs or an equivalent amount of egg protein from egg white and found that whole eggs significantly increased muscle protein synthesis rates to a greater extent than the egg white treatment.
Another study found that the calcium in eggshell powder may be better absorbed than pure calcium carbonate, making it an effective calcium supplement. The study found that eggshell powder, along with vitamin D3 and magnesium, significantly strengthened the bones of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis by improving bone mineral density.
There is no recommended dosage for whole egg powder, but research suggests that an optimal dose of 20 g or more is effective for muscle protein synthesis. However, it is important to consume it in the context of a diet providing an adequate amount of dietary protein.
There are no known side effects of whole egg powder. Lecithin, a component of egg yolks, is generally safe for most adults but may cause allergic reactions in people with egg or soy allergies. Inulin, another component of egg yolks, is generally safe but larger doses may cause gas and loose stools.
