Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is a water-soluble vitamin that the body needs for several functions. It is one of eight B vitamins and is important for proper cell function. Vitamin B6 is involved in turning food into energy and creating neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine.

Vitamin B6 has several benefits for the body, including promoting brain health, improving mood, and maintaining healthy skin and red blood cells. Studies have shown that Vitamin B6 can be beneficial for individuals with certain conditions, such as pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy. Giving infants vitamin B6 by IV controls seizures caused by this condition. Other studies suggest that vitamin B6, when combined with folic acid and vitamin B12, might prevent diseases of the heart and blood vessels by reducing the levels of an amino acid in the blood called homocysteine.

The recommended daily amount of Vitamin B6 for adults 50 and younger is 1.3 milligrams. After age 50, the recommended daily amount is 1.5 milligrams for women and 1.7 milligrams for men. Although Vitamin B6 is generally safe, high doses of B6 have been linked to nerve damage characterized by ataxia (loss of control of bodily movements). Chronic administration of 1–6 g oral pyridoxine per day for 12–40 months can cause severe and progressive sensory neuropathy. Other potential side effects of taking too much Vitamin B6 include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and headache.
