Vit B6 Co-enzyme (Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate)
Vitamin B6 co-enzyme, also known as pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP), is the active form of vitamin B6. It is essential to over 100 enzymes that are mostly involved in protein metabolism.
Here are some benefits of vitamin B6 co-enzyme:
- May help with nausea, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), atherosclerosis, and anemia.
- May improve memory performance, especially in people who are deficient.
- May improve PMS symptoms of depression, irritability, and anxiety.
There are several case studies regarding the benefits of vitamin B6 co-enzyme. For example, a three-month study in over 60 premenopausal women found that taking 50 mg of vitamin B6 daily improved PMS symptoms of depression, irritability, and anxiety. Pregnant people should consult a physician because doses could approach the UL. The recommended daily intake of vitamin B6 for adults is 1.3 to 1.7 mg.
There are potential side effects of taking vitamin B6 co-enzyme. Vitamin B6 is possibly safe when taken in doses of 101-200 mg daily, but higher amounts are clearly toxic. Prolonged supplementation with high doses (>1000 mg/day) can result in severe and progressive sensory neuropathy characterized by ataxia (loss of control of bodily movements). Other side effects include nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, headache, and painful, disfiguring dermatological effects.
