Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium hyaluronate is a salt form of hyaluronic acid that is commonly used in skin care and joint health products. It is extracted and used separately because it has a lower molecular weight than hyaluronic acid, which allows it to penetrate the epidermis and improve hydration from the underlying skin layers.

Here are some benefits of sodium hyaluronate:
  • Reduces wrinkles: A 2014 study found that formulas with sodium hyaluronate decreased wrinkle depth and improved elasticity.
  • Improves skin hydration: Sodium hyaluronate can penetrate the skin and improve hydration from the underlying skin layers.
  • Lubricates joints: Hyaluronate is similar to a substance that occurs naturally in joints and helps joints work properly by acting like a lubricant and shock absorber.
  • Reduces pain caused by osteoarthritis: Sodium hyaluronate is injected directly into the knee joint to relieve pain caused by osteoarthritis.

The recommended dosage of sodium hyaluronate depends on the specific product and the condition being treated. For example, in the case of treating pain caused by osteoarthritis, a treatment cycle typically consists of five injections given at weekly intervals. Potential side effects of sodium hyaluronate can include transient rise in intraocular pressure, cough, difficulty in swallowing, dizziness, redness of skin, and blue color or flushing of skin.
