Sodium Beta-hydroxybutyrate

Sodium Beta-hydroxybutyrate is a chemical compound that can be made by the body and is also available as a supplement. It is a type of ketone body that is used as an energy source when not enough carbohydrates or sugars have been eaten.

For example, a study published in the MDPI journal found that sustained 7.5 g of daily exogenous BHB salt consumption for 90 days was safe for healthy adolescents. Another study published in PMC found that supplementing with a Sodium and Calcium DL-β-Hydroxybutyrate Salt led to a significant increase of D-βHB concentration in blood 2.5 and 3 h after oral intake.

The recommended dosage of Sodium Beta-hydroxybutyrate is not clear, as there is not enough reliable information to know what an appropriate dose might be. However, BHB is possibly safe when taken as a single dose of 380 mg/kg. Some people might experience stomach upset, diarrhea, constipation, and stomach pain when taking BHB, especially at very high doses.
