Selenium Citrate

Selenium citrate is a form of the mineral selenium that is bound to citric acid. Selenium is an essential mineral that works as an antioxidant, protecting cells from damage. The recommended daily intake of selenium for adults is 55 mcg daily, but this can vary based on age, sex, and other factors.

Here are some benefits of selenium citrate:
  • May benefit those with autoimmune thyroiditis: Taking selenium by mouth daily along with thyroid hormone might benefit adults with this condition.
  • May lower LDL cholesterol levels: Selenium combined with other antioxidants, including vitamin E and beta-carotene, may help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.
  • May reduce cisplatin’s toxicity: Selenium supplementation can reduce cisplatin’s toxicity.

The safe upper limit for selenium is 400 micrograms a day in adults. Anything above that is considered an overdose. High doses of selenium can cause stomach discomfort, headache, rash, hair loss, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and weight loss. Extremely high doses can lead to organ failure and death. Selenium may interact with other medicines and supplements, such as some antacids, chemotherapy drugs, corticosteroids, niacin, cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, and birth control pills. People with kidney or stomach problems should be cautious when taking selenium supplements, as these conditions may cause higher blood levels of selenium.

Recommended dosage of selenium citrate:

  • Adult and teenage males: 40 to 70 micrograms (mcg) per day
  • Adult and teenage females: 45 to 55 mcg per day
  • Pregnant females: 65 mcg per day
