Potassium Gluconate

Potassium gluconate is a mineral supplement used to treat or prevent low levels of potassium in the blood, which is important for the normal function of the heart, muscles, and nerves. Potassium gluconate may be used to treat hypokalemia, which can occur in cases of severe diarrhea and vomiting, hormone problems such as hyperaldosteronism, or treatment with diuretics or “water pills”.

Some studies suggest that higher intakes of potassium may reduce the risk of diseases like high blood pressure and stroke, osteoporosis, kidney stones, and type 2 diabetes. However, potassium gluconate may cause side effects such as upset stomach, nausea, vomiting, gas, or diarrhea. Rarely, potassium gluconate may cause serious side effects such as allergic reactions, ulcers, bleeding, and heart problems.

The recommended dose of potassium gluconate depends on the condition being treated, but the typical dose for high blood pressure is 48-90 mEq daily. According to a study, humans absorb about 94% of potassium gluconate in supplements, and this absorption rate is similar to that of potassium from potatoes. It is important to consult with a doctor or pharmacist before using potassium gluconate with any other medications, especially heart or blood pressure medication, a diuretic or “water pill”.
