Lutein 5%

Lutein is a type of carotenoid, a natural pigment found in various foods and also synthesized in the body. It is often referred to as the “eye vitamin” because it plays a significant role in maintaining good vision. Lutein is concentrated in the macula, a part of the retina in the eye. As part of a health supplement, Lutein 5% indicates that the product contains 5% of Lutein by weight. It is often derived from natural sources such as marigold flowers.

Benefits
  1. Eye Health: Lutein helps protect the eyes from damage caused by sunlight, aging, and oxidative stress. It may help prevent or slow down the progression of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
  2. Brain Health: Emerging research suggests lutein may have neuroprotective properties, possibly aiding in cognitive functions.
  3. Skin Health: Some studies indicate that lutein may support skin health by improving hydration and elasticity and protecting the skin from sun damage.

According to studies, taking lutein supplements by mouth for up to 36 months can improve some symptoms of AMD. More benefits might be seen when it’s taken for at least 3 months at doses above 5 mg, and when it’s combined with other antioxidants such as zeaxanthin. Supplementing with lutein and zeaxanthin was associated with greater improvements in visual memory and visual learning, compared to a placebo, with no other side effects identified.

The recommended dosage of Lutein 5% is typically 10-20 mg by mouth daily for up to 3 years. Consuming up to 20 mg of lutein daily as part of the diet or as a supplement appears to be safe. However, pregnant or breastfeeding women and children should not take supplemental lutein. Based on the lack of reported side effects in the studies that have been done, up to 20 mg per day of a lutein supplement should be safe for adults.
