Luo Han Guo
Luo Han Guo, also known as monk fruit or Siraitia grosvenorii, is a small melon native to southern China and Northern Thailand. In traditional Chinese medicine, it has been used for centuries as a natural sweetener and also as a remedy for various ailments. It is named after the arhat monks, who were the first to cultivate the fruit. The sweet taste of Luo Han Guo comes from its unique antioxidants called mogrosides, which are about 200-300 times sweeter than sugar but contain no calories.
Benefits
- Natural Sweetener: Due to its high sweetness and zero-calorie profile, Luo Han Guo is often used as a natural sugar substitute, helping to reduce sugar intake and potentially contributing to weight loss or better management of conditions such as diabetes.
- Antioxidant Properties: The mogrosides in Luo Han Guo have antioxidant properties, which help in combating oxidative stress, a key factor in ageing and many chronic diseases.
- Anti-Inflammatory: Some studies suggest that Luo Han Guo has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce inflammation in the body, potentially contributing to better overall health.
- Respiratory Health: Traditionally, Luo Han Guo has been used in Chinese medicine to soothe a sore throat and reduce phlegm. It’s often used in cooling beverages in Asian countries to relieve heat stroke and enhance lung function.
