Hordenine

Hordenine (N,N-dimethyltyramine) is a naturally occurring alkaloid found in a variety of plants such as barley (Hordeum vulgare) and bitter orange (Citrus aurantium). It is often used as a constituent of dietary supplements, primarily due to its reported stimulant effects.

Benefits:
  1. Stimulant Effect: Hordenine is known for its adrenergic function. It acts as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), which prevents the breakdown of neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. This may lead to increased levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain, potentially enhancing mood and energy.
  2. Weight Loss: Some users take hordenine for its potential to aid in weight loss. As a stimulant, it may increase metabolic rate and fat oxidation, although research in this area remains inconclusive.
  3. Improved Cognitive Function: Hordenine is sometimes used in nootropic (cognitive-enhancing) supplements. Theoretically, by increasing levels of certain neurotransmitters, it may enhance focus, attention, and mental clarity. However, more research is needed to substantiate these claims.

The appropriate dose of hordenine depends on several factors such as the user’s age, health, and several other conditions. At this time there is not enough scientific information to determine an appropriate range of doses for hordenine (in children/in adults). However, some studies have shown that a dose of 20 mg can be effective as a performance booster.

Hordenine may have serious side effects such as increased heart rate and high blood pressure. Avoid taking stimulant drugs along with hordenine. Some stimulant drugs include amphetamine, caffeine, methylphenidate, pseudoephedrine, and many others.
