Griffonia Seed Extract

Griffonia Seed Extract is derived from the seeds of the Griffonia simplicifolia plant, which is native to West and Central Africa. The extract contains a chemical called 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), which is a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, appetite, and sleep.

Benefits of Griffonia Seed Extract

Griffonia Seed Extract has been used for various purposes, including depression, anxiety, weight loss, headaches, and insomnia. However, there is limited scientific research to support these uses. Some early research shows that taking Griffonia simplicifolia extract can reduce stress in some people.

A study published in the Journal of Diet Supplements found that Tinnitan Duo®, a supplement containing Griffonia simplicifolia extract, was effective in reducing subjective tinnitus with emotional affectation. However, this study was small and further research is needed to confirm these findings.

Another study published in Phytochemical Analysis found that Griffonia simplicifolia seeds contain 5-HTP and developed an HPLC method for the direct assay of 5-HTP in the seeds.

Recommended Dosage

According to SelfDecode Supplements, the most beneficial effects of Griffonia Seed Extract have been observed at a dose of 100 mg taken orally once or twice per day. However, there is no safe and effective dose of Griffonia simplicifolia for any health purpose because no sufficiently large studies have been conducted.

Potential Side Effects

Griffonia Seed Extract may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, euphoria, hypomania, restlessness, rapid speech, anxiety, and insomnia. Large doses of 5-HTP (6-10 grams daily) have been linked to severe stomach problems and muscle spasms. Taking Griffonia simplicifolia along with medications for depression might increase serotonin too much and cause serious side effects including heart problems, shivering, and anxiety.
