Glutathione

Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that is naturally produced by the body and found in certain foods such as fruits and vegetables. It plays a critical role in detoxification, mitochondrial function, and healthy aging.

Research suggests that there are several benefits of adding glutathione supplements to the diet, including:

  • Reducing the effects of stress on the body
  • Reducing inflammation throughout the body
  • Improving psoriasis symptoms
  • Lowering the risk of insulin resistance and improving blood sugar regulation

There have been no reported side effects with the available doses of glutathione supplements, which contain on average 1500 mg/day of reduced glutathione. Some studies have shown that when glutathione was given in doses of up to 5g per day, both orally and intravenously, no toxicity was observed. However, it is recommended to speak to a doctor if you plan to incorporate it into a treatment plan for a specific medical condition.

One study found that short-term, oral intake of glutathione does not improve glutathione status or reduce markers of oxidative stress in healthy volunteers. However, more research is needed to identify appropriate dosages and forms of glutathione. In addition, more studies looking at different ways of administering glutathione, such as intravenously, are needed to determine if it could be more effective.
