Glucomannan (Konjac) 95% P.E.
Glucomannan is a type of dietary fiber derived from the root of the konjac plant. Glucomannan, the soluble fiber found in the root of the konjac plant, is widely recognized for its ability to absorb large amounts of water. It expands significantly in the stomach after consumption, leading to a feeling of fullness. In supplement form, it is often standardized to contain 95% Glucomannan, hence the term “Konjac 95% P.E.” (P.E. stands for plant extract). The remaining 5% is typically made up of small amounts of proteins, lipids, and sugars naturally found in the konjac plant.
Glucomannan is commonly used for constipation, diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and obesity. It has also been shown to aid in weight loss, reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and relieve constipation. It is available in various forms, including capsules, tablets, and powder.
A study conducted on constipated adults showed that supplementation of konjac glucomannan into a low-fiber Chinese diet promoted bowel movement and improved colonic ecology. Another study demonstrated that konjac glucomannan supplementation caused significant fat loss in compliant overweight adults. In addition, a clinical study showed that konjac glucomannan’s effects on human bowel habits were assessed in a study of healthy adults, and it was found that it improved bowel movement.
The recommended dosage of glucomannan varies depending on the condition being treated. Clinical studies of glucomannan in diabetes, cholesterol control, and obesity have used dosages of 1 to 13 g daily. Glucomannan is generally safe when taken as recommended. However, it may cause side effects such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, and stomach discomfort. It is important to drink plenty of water when taking glucomannan to prevent choking or blockage of the throat or intestines.
