F,D &C Blue

F,D &C Blue is a synthetic blue dye that is commonly used in food, drugs, and cosmetics. It is also known as Brilliant Blue FCF. According to a review article, synthetic food colorings like F,D &C Blue have been associated with various health effects, including hyperactivity in children, allergic reactions, and cancer. The article suggests that synthetic colors should be replaced with natural alternatives.

One study found that chronic exposure to Brilliant Blue FCF in rats resulted in a decrease in terminal mean body weight and decreased survival in the highest dose tested. Another report by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) found that while most children have no adverse effects when consuming foods containing color additives, some evidence suggests that synthetic food dyes may cause neurobehavioral effects in children.

There are no specific dosage recommendations for F,D &C Blue, as it is used in a variety of products in varying amounts. However, it is regulated by the FDA, which sets limits on its use in food and drugs. As for potential side effects, a drug called Jaypirca (Pirtobrutinib Tablets) contains F,D &C Blue #2, and its prescribing information lists several possible side effects, including headache, nausea, and fatigue. Another drug called Motpoly XR (Lacosamide Extended-release Capsules) also contains F,D &C Blue #2, and its prescribing information lists dizziness, headache, nausea, somnolence, and fatigue as possible side effects.
