False Unicorn Powder

False Unicorn Powder is derived from the underground stem (rhizome) and root of the False Unicorn herb. It has been used in traditional medicine as a uterine tonic for treatment of amenorrhea, morning sickness, menstrual problems, menopausal symptoms, vomiting from pregnancy, and infertility. False Unicorn Powder has also been used to promote production of urine, expel intestinal worms, induce vomiting, and as a mild GI tract stimulant. False Unicorn Powder might contain chemicals that stimulate the uterus and kill intestinal worms. It might also increase the production of urine.

There are no clinical studies regarding the use of false unicorn as a uterine tonic. However, it has been used by North American Indians to prevent miscarriage, manage menstruation problems, and enhance fertility. In a study of herbal alternative therapies for menopause, the extract was used in a combination preparation; however, the presence of false unicorn in the capsules could not be confirmed.

False Unicorn Powder has not been standardized and there are no clinical studies to support a particular dosage. Traditional doses have included 1 to 2 g of the root as a tea or 2 to 5 mL of the root tincture three times a day as a uterine tonic or diuretic. False Unicorn Powder is not considered safe for consumption.

No adverse effects have been reported with the use of false unicorn. However, it can irritate the stomach and intestines and should not be used if there are any problems with the stomach or intestines. False Unicorn Powder may stimulate uterine contraction and induce miscarriage; therefore, it should not be used during pregnancy. Not enough is known about the safety of using false unicorn during breastfeeding; therefore, it should be avoided.
