Epimedium P.E. 10%
Epimedium P.E. 10% is a supplement derived from the Epimedium plant, also known as horny goat weed. It contains icariin, a flavonoid that has been shown to have several potential benefits. One of the most notable benefits is its ability to help maintain healthy bones by enhancing bone building and growth and preventing bone breakdown and loss.
In one clinical trial, an herbal regimen containing epimedium-derived flavonoids prevented bone loss in 74 postmenopausal women. Its flavonoids can have estrogen-like effects, which are desirable in women after menopause. Epimedium P.E. 10% may also have anti-inflammatory activity. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that Epimedium may be effective for osteoporosis based on Western and Eastern medicine. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings.
The recommended dosage of Epimedium P.E. 10% is not established, but commercially-available supplements contain 600 – 1,000 mg of the extract per tablet or capsule and recommend taking it once daily. There are no known side effects of Epimedium P.E. 10%, but it is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity reactions to the Epimedium species. Pregnant or lactating women should avoid using it as well due to lack of safety information.
While there are several case studies regarding the benefits of Epimedium P.E. 10%, more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness. Some relevant case studies include:
- An herbal regimen containing epimedium-derived flavonoids prevented bone loss in 74 postmenopausal women.
- Herba Epimedii water extract elevates estrogen level and improves lipid metabolism in postmenopausal women.
- Anti-inflammatory activity of Epimedium brevicornu maxim ethanol extract.
- Preclinical studies and clinical evaluation of compounds from the genus Epimedium for osteoporosis and bone health.
- A systematic review and meta-analysis found that Epimedium may be effective for osteoporosis based on Western and Eastern medicine.
