Cirsium Japonicum

Cirsium Japonicum is a perennial herb of the chrysanthemum family that is mainly distributed in China, Korea, Japan, and other places. It has been used as folk medicine for centuries, and modern pharmacological studies have shown that it has various benefits such as protecting the liver, antioxidation, anti-tumor, anti-inflammation, antibacterial, and anti-aging effects.

A study investigated the effects of Cirsium japonicum flower extract on glycation in relation to skin aging and skin elasticity. The results showed that Cirsium japonicum flower extract has anti-glycation effects and can improve skin elasticity.

Another study demonstrated that Cirsium japonicum var. maackii (CJM) can improve cognitive impairment and has anti-inflammatory and antihypertensive effects. Moreover, cirsimaritin, a major component of Cirsium japonicum extract, has been shown to have beneficial effects on high-fat diet-induced metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) in a mouse model. Additionally, cirsimaritin inhibited angiogenesis by downregulation of VEGF, p-Akt and p-ERK in MDA-MB-231 cells, suggesting that cirsimaritin is potentially useful as an anti-metastatic agent.

There are potential side effects of Cirsium Japonicum such as nausea and vomiting or other gastric disorders. It is important to note that pregnant women and individuals with liver or kidney disease should avoid taking Cirsium Japonicum supplements.
