Celery Seed Extract
Celery seed extract is derived from the seeds of the celery plant and has been used for thousands of years in Eastern medicine to treat various ailments such as colds, flu, water retention, poor digestion, arthritis, and certain diseases of the liver and spleen. Today, celery seed extract is mostly used as a diuretic to help the body eliminate water by increasing urine output. It is also used to treat arthritis and gout, reduce muscle spasms, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and protect the liver from damaging substances such as high doses of acetaminophen.
A study by Powanda et al. found that extracts of celery seed modestly decreased systolic and diastolic blood pressure in rats. Another study by Maruyama et al. identified the botanical origin of Indian celery seed. However, further studies are needed to confirm these results in humans.
The recommended dosage of celery seed extract varies depending on the form of the supplement and the condition being treated. As a general guideline, doses range from 500-1,000 mg per day for blood pressure reduction and 75-150 mg per day for joint pain relief.
Celery seed extract is generally considered safe when taken in food amounts or as a supplement. However, it may cause allergic reactions in some people and may interact with certain medications such as lithium and thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Pregnant women should avoid taking celery seed extract as it may stimulate uterine contractions.
