Catalase

Catalase is an enzyme that helps to break down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. It is found in almost all living organisms and is particularly abundant in the liver, where it helps to detoxify harmful substances.

Here are some benefits of catalase:
  • May help prevent degenerative diseases: Studies have shown that catalase may play a role in preventing degenerative diseases such as diabetes mellitus, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, vitiligo, and acatalasemia.
  • May help prevent inflammatory bowel disease: Catalase has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and may help prevent inflammatory bowel disease.
  • May help prevent oxidative stress: Catalase helps to break down hydrogen peroxide, which is a reactive oxygen species that can cause oxidative stress in the body. By reducing hydrogen peroxide levels, catalase may help prevent oxidative stress.

There are several case studies regarding the benefits of catalase. A study published in PMC showed that nanoparticle-loaded catalase had a significant positive effect on neuronal cells pre-exposed to hydrogen peroxide, reducing the hydrogen peroxide-induced cell death. Another study published in MDPI explored the potential use of catalase to diminish the level of H2O2 and its deleterious action on intestinal cells.

There isn’t any scientific evidence that catalase supplements have any effect on catalase levels in the body. Despite this, catalase has found its way into numerous formulations on the market. Catalase-only products come in various forms: capsules, liquids, and powder. Since catalase is present in just about every food we eat, consuming additional amounts of the enzyme probably won’t do much harm – but it’s best to consult your healthcare provider about your specific situation before supplementing.
