Carrot Powder
Carrot powder is made from dried and ground carrots. It is a rich source of many plant compounds, especially carotenoids, such as beta-carotene and lutein. Carotenoids are substances with powerful antioxidant activity that have been linked to improved immune function and reduced risk of many illnesses, including heart disease, various degenerative ailments, and certain types of cancer.
Here are some benefits of carrot powder:
- Reduced risk of cancer: Diets rich in carotenoids may help protect against several types of cancer.
- Improved heart health: Carrot powder is rich in potassium, which helps to regulate blood pressure better. Carrot is also rich in antioxidants which further benefit heart health.
- Eye health: Vitamin A, which is plentiful in carrots, is crucial to ongoing eye health. Some studies have linked low levels of vitamin A with a greater risk of night blindness. High intakes of vitamin A may also reduce the risk of stomach cancer.
- Weight loss: Carrots have very few calories per serving. They can help you feel full so you won’t eat as much, reducing calorie intake overall and supporting weight loss and a healthy diet.
- Skin health: Carrot root powder has flavonoids and vitamin C in high enough quantities that their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can benefit our skin.
Numerous studies have been conducted on the health benefits of carrots and their nutrients, which can be reasonably applied to carrot powder as well.
One such study is a 2018 review of evidence on dietary carrots and human health published in the journal “Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition”. The study confirmed that the high levels of bioactive molecules (like carotenoids, polyacetylenes, and vitamin C) found in carrots contribute to their beneficial properties including anti-cancer, anti-cholesterol, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. Hence, including carrot powder in one’s diet could potentially offer similar benefits.
Another study from the “Journal of the American Medical Association” in 2005 showed that a diet rich in foods containing beta-carotene, like carrots, could have a protective effect against type 2 diabetes among people who have a genetic predisposition to the disease.
Moreover, a comprehensive 2012 review published in the “American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” discussed the role of dietary fiber (abundant in carrot powder) in health and disease. The study highlighted the beneficial effects of dietary fiber on weight management, cardiovascular health, and regulation of blood sugar levels.
The recommended dosage for carrot powder varies depending on the intended use. As a general guideline, 1-2 teaspoons per day can be added to smoothies or other foods. There are no known side effects of consuming carrot powder in moderation. However, consuming large amounts for several weeks might cause the skin to turn yellow.
