Apricot Kernel Extract

Apricot kernel extract is derived from the inner part of the seed of the apricot fruit, which is used to produce oil and other chemicals for medicinal purposes.

Here are some benefits of apricot kernel extract:
  • Cancer treatment: Despite serious safety concerns, apricot kernel is used for treating cancer. It is taken by mouth or given as an injection. Apricot kernel contains a toxic chemical known as amygdalin, which is converted to cyanide in the body. It was thought that amygdalin was taken up first by cancer cells and converted to cyanide, which would kill the cancer cells. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this use.
  • Cardiovascular health: Apricot kernel extract has been shown to help prevent cardio-metabolic disorders and other diseases such as cognitive performance of aging, colorectal cancer, promoting cardiovascular disease.
  • Skin health: Apricot kernel extract helps in boosting skin health.
  • Vision: Apricot kernel extract helps in enhancing vision.
  • Diabetes: Apricot kernel extract helps in reducing the risk of diabetes.

The recommended dosage for apricot kernel extract is not clear. When taken as medicine, there isn’t enough reliable information to know what an appropriate dose of apricot kernel might be. But large doses can be dangerous. Purified apricot kernel oil is used as a flavoring in food and liquor. It is also sometimes used in cosmetic products.

There are potential side effects of consuming apricot kernel extract. Consuming larger amounts of apricot kernels can be unsafe because they contain amygdalin, which is converted into cyanide in the body and can cause poisoning. Therefore, no more than 2 small apricot kernels or half of a large apricot kernel should be taken daily. Consumption of apricot kernels or laetrile, a chemical constituent found in the apricot kernel, should be avoided because safety and efficacy are unproven.
