Alpha Yohimbe
Alpha Yohimbe is a supplement that contains yohimbine, an active compound found in the bark of the African yohimbe tree. It is marketed as a weight loss supplement and to improve body composition. Yohimbine’s ability to block alpha-2 adrenergic receptors located in fat cells could, in theory, lead to greater weight loss and decreases in body fat. However, more research is needed before yohimbe is recommended for widespread use as a weight loss supplement. Yohimbe is also used to boost mood, for athletic performance, and other purposes, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.
There are some risks associated with taking yohimbe supplements. Potential side effects of yohimbe include stomach problems such as diarrhea and nausea, anxiety, high blood pressure, tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), dizziness, nervousness, and insomnia. Taking high doses of yohimbe can be potentially dangerous and lead to severe side effects such as anxiety, drowsiness, disorientation, tremors, and seizures.
The usual recommended dose of purified yohimbine is 5 to 10 mg three times a day. When taken at the recommended dose (≤0.2 mg per kg of body weight), yohimbine may cause nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, nervousness, and anxiety. People considering taking yohimbe supplements should talk to their doctor before doing so. A doctor may be able to offer a safer regulated alternative.
There are no specific case studies regarding the benefits of Alpha Yohimbe. However, some studies have found that taking yohimbine led to greater weight loss and decreases in body fat. Nonetheless, more research is needed to evaluate if yohimbe is an effective weight loss supplement.
