Alpha Galactosidase
Alpha Galactosidase is a digestive enzyme that helps break down complex carbohydrates, specifically a type of non-absorbable fiber called galactooligosaccharides (GOS), mostly found in beans, root vegetables, and some dairy products. It is produced by our friendly gut bugs and helps us break down complex sugars (RFOs) in healthy foods like whole grains, legumes, and vegetables.
Here are some benefits of Alpha Galactosidase:
- Helps prevent gas: Alpha-galactosidase can help prevent intestinal gas caused by consuming foods that contain GOS.
- Reduces gas-related symptoms: A double-blind placebo-controlled trial showed that taking 300 or 1,200 GalU of alpha-galactosidase with a test meal containing cooked beans significantly reduced the severity of all gas-related symptoms. Researchers noted that 1,200 GalU of alpha-galactosidase also significantly reduced breath hydrogen, which is a common indicator of gas.
The recommended dosage for Alpha Galactosidase is 450 galactosidase units (GalU) taken with each carbohydrate-containing meal. There are no known side effects of Alpha Galactosidase for healthy adults. However, individuals with diabetes or a genetic condition called galactosemia should avoid it as it may raise blood sugar levels.
