Blueberry Powder
Blueberry powder is made from freeze-dried blueberries. Blueberries are a small, blue-purple fruit that belong to the genus vaccinium, which also includes cranberries and bilberries. Blueberry powder is a popular food supplement that is rich in antioxidants and anthocyanins, which are effective at reducing cognitive decline, supporting cardiovascular health, protecting the liver, and reducing liver fat buildup
Here are some benefits of blueberry powder:
- Reduces inflammation: In a study with high-fat–fed rats, blueberry intake moderated the negative effects of the high-fat diet on inflammation and insulin signaling.
- Improves cognitive function: Blueberry powder has been found to improve cognitive function and memory in older adults.
- Supports cardiovascular health: Epidemiological studies associate regular, moderate intake of blueberries and/or anthocyanins with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, death, and type 2 diabetes.
- Protects the liver: Blueberry powder has been found to protect the liver from damage caused by toxins and alcohol.
The recommended dosage for dried blueberry powder is 5.5 g for brain health and cardiovascular health, with higher doses possibly being more effective. Blueberry extract is safe for most people to take in the recommended dosages. However, drinks made with freeze-dried blueberries might cause constipation, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting in some people.
There are several case studies regarding the benefits of blueberry powder. For example, a study found that a creatine plus blueberry extract supplement improved cognitive function in young adults. Another study found that blueberry powder improved cognitive function and memory in older adults. Additionally, epidemiological studies have associated regular, moderate intake of blueberries and/or anthocyanins with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, death, and type 2 diabetes.
