Whey Protein Concentrate(WPC 80)
Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC 80) is a protein supplement made from the liquid portion of milk that separates from the curds when making cheese. It contains 80% protein and is rich in amino acids. WPC 80 is used to improve athletic performance, as a food supplement, and as an alternative to milk for lactose-intolerant individuals. It is also used to supplement milk-based infant formulas, reverse weight loss, increase glutathione levels in people with HIV, and prevent allergies in infants.
Some studies suggest that WPC 80 may reduce tumor size in some people with cancer that has spread, improve lung function in people with cystic fibrosis, and improve antioxidant defense systems in the salivary glands of aging organisms. WPC 80 is also known to be beneficial for muscle gain and fat loss. However, there is no good scientific evidence to support most of the other uses of WPC 80.
The recommended dosage for improving athletic performance is 1.2-1.5 grams/kg of body weight per day. High doses of WPC 80 can cause side effects such as increased bowel movements, nausea, thirst, bloating, cramps, reduced appetite, fatigue, and headaches. As with any supplement, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before taking WPC 80.
Case studies:
- A study found that WPC-80 improved antioxidant defense systems in the salivary glands of 14-month Wistar rats.
- Another study found that WPC-80 may intensify glycoconjugate catabolism and induce oxidative stress in the liver of rats.
