Lycopene
Lycopene is a natural pigment that belongs to the carotenoid family, which is responsible for giving fruits and vegetables their red color. It is found in high amounts in tomatoes, watermelon, pink grapefruit, and guava.
Here are some benefits of lycopene:
- Antioxidant: Lycopene is an antioxidant that helps protect the body from free radical stress that can damage DNA and other cell structures. It helps balance free radical activity in the body and may reduce the risk of certain diseases.
- Cancer prevention: Lycopene has been studied for its potential to prevent certain types of cancer, such as breast, colon, ovarian, pancreatic, prostate, and lung cancers. A study published in “Cancer Cell International” in 2012 found that lycopene effectively inhibits cell proliferation in these types of cancers.
- Cardiovascular health: Lycopene may have benefits for cardiovascular health. A study published in “Advances in Nutrition” in 2020 found that lycopene supplementation improved endothelial function in people with cardiovascular disease.
- Eye Health: Lycopene, along with other carotenoids, may help protect the eyes against damage and the development of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
- Skin Health: Some evidence suggests that lycopene could help protect the skin against sun damage. It’s not a substitute for sun cream, but it might provide some additional defense.
There isn’t a specified recommended daily allowance (RDA) for lycopene. Dosages in studies range from about 8–40 mg per day. It’s usually safe to follow the dosage instructions on the packaging of the supplement. In some cases, consuming excessive lycopene can cause:
- Diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps or bloating.
- Changes in the color of the skin and sweat to a deep yellow or orange.
- Possible interactions with certain medications, particularly those used for high blood pressure.
