Licorice Extract
Licorice extract is derived from the root of the licorice plant and contains glycyrrhizin, which is believed to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties. Licorice extract is available in many forms, including herbal teas, candies, capsules of dried herb, and liquid extract.
Licorice extract has been used for various health conditions such as heartburn, digestive problems, fatigue, eczema, and menopausal symptoms. However, there is no good scientific evidence to support most of these uses. Some clinical studies investigating the potential benefits of licorice have had promising results, particularly in reducing LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol and blood pressure levels in people with high cholesterol.
Licorice extract has also been validated as an anticancer agent to treat various cancers such as breast, colon, and liver. Nevertheless, licorice root contains glycyrrhizin which can cause serious side effects when eaten in large amounts or for a long time. Eating licorice 5 grams or more daily for several weeks can cause severe side effects including heart attack. People who have heart disease, kidney disease, or high blood pressure are more susceptible to these side effects. Licorice extract may also interact with medications for inflammation (Corticosteroids).
The recommended dosage of licorice extract varies depending on the form of the supplement and the intended use. It is important to follow the instructions on the product label or consult a healthcare professional before taking licorice extract supplements.
