Hydrolyzed fish collagen is a type of collagen that is derived from fish skin and scales. It is broken down into smaller units of protein, or collagen peptides, through a process called hydrolysis. Hydrolyzed fish collagen is absorbed more efficiently into the body and has superior bioavailability over bovine or porcine collagens.
Fish collagen is high in essential and non-essential amino acids. Supplementing with hydrolyzed fish collagen can reduce wrinkles, decrease the appearance of cellulite, improve skin hydration, and enhance skin elasticity and firmness. A double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study found that oral supplementation with hydrolyzed fish cartilage was effective in reducing skin pores.
The recommended daily dose of hydrolyzed collagen peptides is 2.5–15 grams per day. The amount you should take depends on the particular supplement and why you are taking it. A smaller daily dose of 2.5 grams could benefit joint pain, skin health, and hydration. Hydrolyzed collagen peptides can be added to sauces, soups, smoothies, and other foods for an extra boost of collagen proteins. A 2.5–15-gram daily dose of collagen appears to be safe and effective. However, there are no known side effects of taking hydrolyzed fish collagen.
