Grape Seed Extract

Grape seed extract is an industrial derivative of grape seeds that is rich in antioxidants and oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes. It is available as a dietary supplement in liquid form, tablets, or capsules, with supplements commonly containing between 50 and 100 milligrams (mg) of the extract.

Grape seed extract has been linked to a wide range of possible health benefits, including:

  • Treatment of conditions such as high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, macular degeneration, poor circulation, and nerve damage.
  • Lowering levels of LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein.
  • Slightly lowering blood pressure in healthy people and those with high blood pressure, particularly in people who are obese or have metabolic syndrome.
  • Helping with symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency and with eye stress from glare.
Case Studies Regarding the Benefits of Grape Seed Extract

A 2019 review of 15 studies involving 825 participants suggested that grape seed extract might help lower levels of LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein. However, the individual studies were small in size, which could affect the results.

The daily dosage of grape seed extract ranges from 300 to 2000 mg. Studies conducted in humans used in the range of 150-300mg Grape Seed extract daily for heart health purposes. Grape seed extract is generally considered safe for antioxidant protection and general wellbeing. However, high dosages may cause unwanted side effects such as nausea, wooziness, and headache. Other potential side effects include dry or itchy scalp, dizziness, indigestion, diarrhea, sore throat, cough, and allergic reactions. People with high blood pressure should not take high doses of grape seed extract with vitamin C because the combination might worsen blood pressure.
