Colostrum

Colostrum is a milky fluid produced by mammals in the first few days after giving birth. It contains high levels of protein, growth factors, and antibodies that help newborns develop their immune systems. Bovine colostrum, which comes from cows, is often used as a dietary supplement for its potential health benefits.

According to a systematic review of 28 studies, bovine colostrum has been shown to have various benefits such as preventing upper respiratory illness in sportsmen, modulating immune system response, and increasing physical performance. It has also been found to help reduce blood sugar levels and cholesterol levels in people with diabetes.

Colostrum has also been known to have healing properties targeted to boost the immune systems in both healthy and chronically ill patients. A study conducted on older adults found that bovine colostrum supplementation for 8 weeks improved exercise performance.

The recommended dosage of bovine colostrum varies depending on the product and the intended use. However, a typical dose is 20-60 grams per day. While bovine colostrum is generally safe for most adults when taken appropriately by mouth, there have been rare reports of side effects such as nausea, vomiting, abnormal liver function tests, gas, skin rash, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Anyone considering taking this supplement should tell their doctor about any drugs, including vitamins, that they take.
